Electric Tiller

The electric tiller is the solution for those wishing for a quiet machine that eliminates excess fumes. Gas powered machines can spew a lot of noxious fumes in the course of tilling a single garden.

Many electric garden tillers are small and compact. They are specifically designed for relatively small gardens or for tight spaces. Most models are front tine designs. They range in weight form about 11 pounds to just over 20 pounds.

These are perfect for flowerbeds that are situated close to a power source. Flower beds around the house or deck can be easily cultivated with a compact electric tiller. Especially suited for city lots where the loud gas powered versions may not be appreciated by neighbors, especially early on a Saturday morning.

Rear tine models with larger 6.5 Hp are available. These are obviously more applicable to a larger garden. The one concern is the availability of power. Larger gardens are most often situated away form the house which means you would need a rather long outdoor rated extension cord to operate the tiller.

Storage Solutions

The electric tillers smaller size makes storage easier. Most come with collapsible handles. They can be hung securely on the wall in your shed or garage or tucked away in a corner when not in use. This certainly is not the case with the large gas powered models.

When purchasing a model it is worth examining these features. Is it easily unassembled? Is there a special storage package available? How much space does it actually take to store?

Add on Options

Many tillers offer expanded use options. As gardeners we tend to gather a different tool for every need. When we can get one tool to serve many purposed we are thrilled.

Some small tillers also double as edgers, weeders, trimmers and hole diggers. Attachments are sold separately but can double or triple the use of your electric tiller.

Some options are included with the purchase of the base model. Common inclusions with the Mantis Electric Tiller are kick stands or garden edgers.

Doing it by hand

For those who have very small beds or densely planted areas tillers will not work. For these areas a hand tiller is the answer.
