Garden Tiller

Large garden tillers or garden cultivators as they are also called are designed for large gardens and large jobs.

The gas tiller is perfect for starting a new bed or weeding between rows in your veggie patch. The large tines and more powerful engine give the power. Rear tine models have the extra power needed for cutting through tough, unbroken areas.

The ability to cultivate deep is perfect when starting a new bed or working in manure or peat moss. The deep cultivation allows new plants to easily send roots into aerated soil.

You might be able to loosen and turn soil in a small garden using a spade but the large vegetable garden demands a large tiller. Because of their larger size these can be more difficult to handle.

Small garden tillers or mini tillers are designed to get into small spaces. Usually weighing 11 to 13 pounds these front tine tillers are more portable and easier to maneuver. The smaller tine length will cultivate previously broken soil, aerate and uproot weeds. A compact tiller is often electric. Although small and portable it is often limited by its size.

Mid range tillers, such as the Mantis Tiller weighs just over 20 pounds but packs a serious punch in the garden. The specially designed tines allow for a 10 inch depth and 9 inch wide path. In reverse, the tiller will cultivate only 2 to 3 inches which is perfect for weeding without disturbing your perennial root systems.

Soft Soil Tiller

If your garden area is basically soft soil and it is less than 1000 sq feet you would be fine with a mini or mid range garden tiller. A 1000 to 4000 sq foot garden warrants a front tine tiller model. A garden over 4000 sq feet is best cultivated with a rear tine garden tiller.

Hard Soil

Hard soil makes most mini cultivators a poor choice. They do not have the power needed to cut through the tough soil. Any size garden with hard soil will need the power of a rear tine cultivator unless it has specially designed tines.
