Hedge Trimmer

Hedge trimmers come in a variety of sizes. Selecting the right trimmer depends on the job you have to do. Before you purchase consider the job at hand.

How wide and tall is your hedge?

You will want a blade that enables you to reach to the top and across the hedge. Using a short blade often results in an uneven hedge line.

How big is your yard?

Small yards can be trimmed using an electric hedge trimmer. Larger yard will need a battery trimmer. Extremely large jobs can be completed with gas-powered trimmers. Some even have attachments that will fit onto a chainsaw.

If you have a very small hedge, clippers or hedge shears may be the answer. They offer the mobility of battery operated hedge trimmers without the cost. Most tend to be relatively lightweight but do require extra muscle power. They also can require some practice to obtain a straight surface.

How often will you use the trimmer?

Consider the amount of time you will be operating the machine. Some hedge trimmers can produce strong vibrations. This might be acceptable if you use it once or twice a year but if you rely on a trimmer regularly, consider the low vibration models. As a rule, dual action blades produce much less vibration, but cost more.

The basics

The only thing worse than untrimmed hedges is a poorly trimmed hedge. Knowing a couple of tricks can make all the difference.

If you are trimming an evergreen hedge and want to obtain a straight, box like effect, always start with the top. Tie a string securely across the length of the hedge to act as a guide. Once the top is completed, tackle the sides.

In order to allow the bottom of the hedge to receive necessary light it is advisable to trim on a slight angle. The base of the hedge should be slightly wider than the top.

In order to maintain the same angle from start to finish a plywood template can be used. Simply cut a trapezoid shape that mirrors your hedge. Insert this perpendicularly, into the hedge and use it as a guide. As you move down the hedge simply move the board with you. Perfect angles every time.

For very large hedges a long reach hedge trimmer may be required. These require extra care and control. A slight hand movement can result in a large ‘trim' at the tip.

Always remember to wear proper safety equipment when trimming hedges.

Happy Trimming
